I tried installing the chipset driver and everything went well until the end where it says to reboot and when I did so, the system gave me the "windows recovered from a serious system error" prompt once again. Maybe I need to install the drivers from safe mode? or uninstall the "not working" sound drivers from safe mode?

You shouldn't need Safe Mode, providing you are logged in with Administrator rights, the installation of drivers should be simple.
There must be something else going on here .... I have to ask .... is this a legit version of XP ?
