My sound has stopped working, there is a red cross throught the sound icon. This has happened since my windows update has an error code and says it can't update windows because of this. The error code is 80070490. The sound driver I have is Realtek.

Where is this red cross? In device manager or in the bottom right of your screen, on the taskbar?

It will be in the system tray. Try going to the PC manufacturer's web site and download the sound drivers and install them.

I had the same issue after a Windows update with my laptop even though the hardware said it was functioning just fine.
All I did to fix the issue was reinstall the driver.

I think what happens is that sometimes Windows Update will install the wrong drivers for your hardware.
