Default Sound only comes from 2 speakers and sub?

Hey everyone,

I'm running Vista 64 bit with a P35C-GS3R Mobo, and have a logitech 5.1 setup. I have my two front speakers, two rear speakers, center speaker and sub. I've installed the sound drivers, and all speakers function properly in the setup panel included with those drivers. It allows me to choose between Stereo, 5.1, and 7.1. Well, I have 5.1 Selected, and it displays my setup on a screen and you can click on the speaker to test it. All of the speakers play the tone properly when clicked, meaning their all functioning properly.

When I try to play music through Windows Media Player, or games, or anything, sound only comes out of the front two speakers, and the subwoofer. I've tried adjusting the WMP settings, however it's already set to 5.1. The settings in control panel are also set to 5.1. Can anyone help? I've tried reinstalling drivers etc... I just cant get the sound to come out of all the speakers when it's coming from applications. Also, when I click the little windows sound tray icon, and then click on the volume nob, it plays a sound only through the front two speakers, figured that might help diagnose a problem.

Thanks.

Just an update, I got it to play through all of the speakers while playing Warcraft 3, I didn't make any settings adjustments. However it still doesn't play through BF2, or Windows Media Player, or anything else for that matter.

I'm not 100% but I think the source has to be 5.1, so most music will just play out the fronts and sub.

Try playing a 5.1 DVD and see if it works.

right i got the same problem with bf2 and loads of other games. apparently its an issue with vista/5.1 sound/ games

im hoping there may be some light on it with service pack they are soon to release.

have you got wmp11 working with 5.1?

like dave said try a dvd, most likely will work if you got the same problem as me.

EDIT

just realize you stated it doesn't work with WMP

have you tried reinstalling it? just pulling at straws really

Why did sound play from my MP3 files through all 5 speakers on XP, but not Vista? That doesn't make sense. I popped in a 5.1 DVD (happy gilmore) and tried to open in windows media player and that lead to another problem...

"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."

Damn. Divx won't play it either.

Edit:

I downloaded Winamp. It plays only through two speakers also. :(

what sound card have you got?

and the difference between XP and vista is that vista has alot of hardware and software problems that are hopefully going to be fixed with the NEW sp1 on its way.

I had the same problem too, and after Googling, I realised I'm using the AC3Filter, and it has a feature to 'upscale' stereo to 5.1

just set the output format to 5.1 in the AC3Filter config page, et voila!

hope it helps
