Default Sound quality suddenly pathetic

I have Vista on a a 3-4 month old mid range laptop, Dell inspiration 9400 to be exact and everything about it has been amazing until the other day when all of a sudden the sound quality just SUCKED. It seems that every 1 second it will get stuck (as if ti was a broken record) just for a tiniest bit of a second. Odesn't sound like much but it is totally unlistenable.

I been trying to think what on earth it could be, i thought maybe i just have to much stuff on here, so i deleted loads of stuff now at least half my hard disk is free. No luck. Since doing that though i have noticed, everytime the sound gets "stuck" the curser is gettin stuck too, (you have to really follow it to see). I have changed visual settings and defragment stuff and all those thing that affect performance, so i am really stuck, could it be the sound card maybe??

If anyone can work out wots going on please reply!!

Thanks

Mark
