Yep .... as Carbon said that's an on board card ... Everest should tell you the Make/model of your motherboard .... if not ... if it's a branded PC (i.e. Dell, HP etc.) tell us the make/model number.

WOO HOO!!!!!!!! FINALLY SOMETHING I KNOW AND CAN UNEQUIVOCALLY, WITHOUT A DOUBT, (yeah I know that is redundant lol but don't rain on my parade), HELP SOMEONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have a realtek audio driver. More specifically an AC'97. You can find your drivers here:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

If that link doesn't work then try this one and click on the AC'97 Audio Codecs link:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Level=3&Conn=2

Oh and thank you. I have realtek HD onboard sound so I recognised the ac'97 because it appears when I update MY drivers. Of course I haven't updated my drivers and when I was looking for yours, I saw new ones for me. In helping you, I helped myself lol.

EDIT 3: (the first two were for crappy spelling and grammer I can never seem to catch before I hit post) Put that in your bag of tricks Carbon and philthomas, the AC '97 is onboard (probably rarely used now) sound from realtek.

EDIT4: Carbon, I recall someone suggesting a program to me on another website that does nothing except identify MoBo's. Are you familiar with such a program or could you recommend one? I need to find out what Dell put in my old computer and my daughter's computer so I can see what I can do with them.

Not sure if there's a program just to identify motherboards. Maybe CPU-Z does it?

.

Yes we do appreciate that Bubba, but the drivers available from the Realtek links you posted are just general drivers and not specific to the motherboard in question. It is always better to download the specific drivers from motherboard manufacturer's website.

They do actually make this clear in your first link :

"Audio drivers available for download from the Realtek website are general drivers for our audio ICs, and may not offer the customizations made by your system/motherboard manufacturer. To be sure you obtain the full features/customizations provided in your original audio product, please download the latest drivers from your system/motherboard manufacturer's website."

AC97 is just a specification for audio, you cannot really identify anything from it.

The motherboards drivers are the best place to get the drivers for it from, but the generic ones will sometimes solve the problem as well. But sometimes with them you end up with very quiet sound or similar problems.

Although this board is made by ASUS, it's a SONY OEM Board, so you wont find it on the ASUS website and Sony if they show it at all will probably hide it away somewhere under VAIO Desktops.

If this is a VAIO Desktop .... I found this page with Chipset, Audio and Ethernet drivers, where the guy has done all the legwork for you, so try this/these downloads and let us know how you get on.

And to THAT I say HORSE SHIT. That is the legal mumbo jumbo, and if you know anything about computers and such you know THAT, but YOU are more interested in being "right" (while at the same time being totally WRONG) than following good advise. Those "bad realtek" drivers work like a charm for ME and for millions of others. The "motherboard manufacturers" do NOTHING but copy those drivers, put their names on them and post them on their website about 2 weeks to a month later.

EDIT: For a PERFECT example, look at the the following thread: http://www.computer-juice.com/forums...77-83-a-18772/

In about a month or two EVGA will have the drivers that Carbon linked from nVidia on THEIR webpage. THEY WILL BE THE SAME DAMN DRIVERS.

Cheerio old chap and all that, you really showed me.

EDITII: Big Mark, Download the drivers I linked you to, install them and report back. I would bet you just about anything that they WORK. If they don't, the drivers aren't your problem. I'll eat all kinds of crow if I'm wrong, hell, these guys couldn't even recognise the on board sound manufacturer.

Why yes, AC97 IS just a specification for audio, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HE IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH.

AC'97 ALSO happens to be a designator for a SPECIFIC type of audio which is made by REALTEK and many MOBO manufacturers used it. I guess I'm missing your point. I'm directing the man straight to the source of what he thinks is the problem. What is the problem there? IF he downloads those up to date drivers and they DON'T work then there is another problem. Am I stepping on ego's here? I struggle with that because I HAVE no ego, I merely want to learn stuff and share what I have learned. Excuse the hell out of me. I will be silent from here on out while you "experts" re invent the wheel.
