Everyone here is entitled to their opinion and generally speaking the advice given is pretty useful. In this case, it seems none of the advice offered was helpful (including yours), but dont be disheartened .... put it down to experience and chin up old boy .......... Anyway ... back to topic :

@ bigmarkc ....... does this box have a Make/Model Name or No. ? ... is it branded Sony Vaio ... Desktop or Laptop ?
No Bubba was on the receiving end of a fight with his wife and perhaps one (or several) too many brewski's and should be old enough to avoid communicating in such a state. Sorry, Phil and everyone else.

We have a saying here, "Everyone shows their butt occasionally, it's how you pull you pants back up that matters." Hope I am pulling mine up correctly lol. So again sorry and thanks for the patience.

bigmark: Strange, I use those drivers for VISTA 64 ,which is pickier than XP I thought, and never got that message. Now having said that, I'll probably get the same thing when I install the drivers I downloaded yesterday, followed by a popping noise and black smoke emanating from underneath my computer case............

Just a thought......... he's tried a variety of drivers with no love. Is it possible that the on board sound is disabled in his BIOS? On my BIOS under "Integrated Perioherals there is an option heading HD Audio with two settings, auto and disable. I have it set for auto since I'm using the onboard sound and not a sound card, but when I set it to disable, I get no sound.

On startup you should get something like "Hit *key* to enter BIOS" or "Hit *key* to enter setup". Tap that key at startup until you get into the BIOS (big blue screen). Look under each heading for onboard devices, etc, if you find Audio set it to enable and press whatever button it says at the bottom to save and quit.

It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Here is the first article I pulled up on google. There is a list of a bunch of different manufacturers and the key to hit for them at the end of the article. http://www.cyberwalker.com/article/28

You may also find some good general information on BIOS's on the following link to Wim's Bios. I say MAY lol because although it looks good to me, I'm also a noob and just learning. I would be interested to hear what the others have to say about Wim's BIOS. and would suggest you do as well before you download anything from there. But the info on identifying the MoBo and BIOS version looks good.
