i bought a cheapy £8 sound card from a local shop just for the benefits of surround 5.1, now it works great for £8, but everytime i try and play a steam game such as css, as soon as i load onto a server the sub doesnt work, its down to my sound card or what? ive got latest drivers for its, the card is a c-media 8738

What OS are you using?
When I use Vista 5.1 doesnt work with my games or crappy Media Player.
Other than that I guess the card is at fault.

OS:Windows Vista Ultimate
Audio:Onboard HDA on EVGA 680i SLi
Driver Version: R176 from Here
I have tried everything.I uninstalled older versions(that also didnt work)used DCPro to remove any remnants of old drivers aswell.
Sound works properly when testing speakers with the Realtek control panel but does not work properly with games or WMP 11.
Have been told it might work with Media Player Classic but havent tried, all I want really is for it to work with my games.
Nothing works
I am not alone, there are plenty of others having this problem with Vista.
If you can fix this you will be as much of a legend as The Fonz.lol

just curious, have you gone on device manager and selected the device to search for updates? chances are high that it will say you all ready have the best up to date driver which is very un true?

just 'surfing' the web for abit for ya mate and some peoples board can take both c-media and realtek drivers, you might wanna check your board out to see, i dont wanna recommend it because i dont know what would happen if im honest, im sure someone on these forums will be able to clarify what im saying im still looking round for ya though mate!

ooo and when you got to control panel, speakers, when you play music etc does the bar go up and down? and have a quick look around your control panel make sure everythings on etc etc, sim sure youve already done this

Hi,Thanks for your efforts
Please dont go out of your way for me though. This is an issue that EVGA or Realtek or M$ will eventually fix.
I rarely use Vista anyway except for trying out DX10 enhanced gamed and usually use XP which has no sound problems.
Edit:Maybe I should buy a cheapo £8 card myself.
