Question Toshiba connection for recording

Toshiba Satellite laptop, some problems with recording streamed audio :( - I have done some research and reckon this is a specific Toshiba 'problem' - Realtek sound card. One general forum I read suggests that you can just connect the headphones output connector on the front of the laptop to the adjacent microphone input using suitable mini stereo jacks and a stereo lead

I don't want to blow my machine up - I have concerns over the impedance of the two different sockets. Anyone managed to do this without blowing up their laptop?

Hi Kalamater

Welcome to PCF

What are you trying to achieve?
The audio level will be set on both input and output.
Your laptop is not a tape deck with a dedicated recording level.

More importantly, Which Toshiba Laptop do you have? I repair Toshiba but I never heard of a specific sound problem, unless it is an old Tecra 510 or 500 unit but these are very old.

What would connecting your headphone to your microphone input achieve? In the worst case you might blow a fuse or another component on your audioboard. So you don't want to do this. AND in the best case you would have no sound at all.

Please explain the problem and what Toshiba you are using.

Thanks for the welcome to PCF - basically what I would like to do is to stream radio stations and record them to CD - so i can then play them in the car (live in Greece so FM radio not enjoyable - mostly). All attempts so far have failed, I can hear the stream fine on the laptop speakers (Toshiba Satellite A100-232, OS - XP Home) and have tried various recording programmes but the resulting file is 'silent'. I have read somewhere that this is particular to Toshiba and one suggested solution was to conect the audio output min-socket to microphone input - thus it should be possible to 'direct' the stream back into the microphone input - which I can then hopefully pass to CD. I have scanned various forums but not joined any - until PCF. I am aware that I can control the volume levels from the SOUNDS AND AUDIO DVICES PROPERTIES. Hope this helps you understand my needs.

THanks for your reply TT, the laptop is Toshiba A100-232 running OS XP Home. Basically I would like to record radio streaming to CD so I can play it in the car (live in Greece so local FM stations not too good for me). I can listen to streamed radio fine but so far all attempts to record (using various programmes) have failed - the recordred file is silent. Read somewhere that this is part of the way the Tosh works (Realtek etc ??????) but also read somewhere that the easiest way around it is to make a direct 'hard' connection from audio output (headphones) to microphone input (both 'mini stereo sockets on the front edge of the machine) - I just wondered if different impedances would result in problems - NO I don't want to blow up the machine - it's barely 8 months old. I am at a basic level of computer understanding (as is probably obvious) but am able to control the volume levels from the SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES PROPERTIES panel - hope this helps you understand my needs and difficulties. Have read other forums re. this problem but decided to join PCF

Just got home so I can't check the Toshiba Forums at Regensburg HQ but the A100 does, as far as my knowledge goes, not have a soundproblem.

As far as I can tell this is a software recording problem. You might want to try Winamp (free) but look in the winampforums first how to record an audio stream and how to link an audio stream to winamp.

Hope this helps, Tom

I have loaded Winamp, and looked at the Winamp forum - there's a lot to take on board . So as Sott said - I am just going outside and may be some time -thanks for your help.
