Was reading on a IT news site, apparently Intel's new Centrino Pro processor is so economical a average of 8 hours battery life can be had from laptops with this processor.

Most laptops I have used had terrible battery life so this is a major leap in my opinion, according to the news article they are due to release the chip in May this year so if your thinking of buying a laptop and battery life is paramount might be a good idea to put it off until then.

I'm happy if I get 1.5 hours out of my Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 :-) (Pentium 4 Cel M 2.4 ghz)

My Portege R100 does get good batterylife though, one battery about 2.5 hours, with both batteries around 6.5 to 7 hours, but turn on the wifi and it drops down to 4 hours....

I love that little R100 :-)

Don't most laptop manufacturers quote battery usage at idle making you think that it lasts longer?

Most quote batterylife with all the powermanagement on, so everyone thinks it works longer, so yes.... true. Famous example, Tecra S2, batterylife 2 to 2.5 hours, WITH powermanagement on (and wifi off), without.... 1.5 hours tops.
