I have an Acer Aspire 5520 Laptop which has a faulty hard drive, but powered on fine. All of a sudden, the laptop powers on for around 10 seconds, then switches off unexpectedly.

Should it be doing this? Nothing was changed between it working fine and it not powering up for long

A laptop not powering on is highly likely to be the PSU, battery or some internal circuit board fault, not the hard drive.

Laptops will power on without a hard drive anyway so remove it and try again, this will confirm.

You didn't say whether you replaced the bad drive or if it is still in the machine?

Can you elaborate on "faulty drive" .... how did you diagnose this ?
