My grandaughter's Advent 7000 laptop has developed the following problem and I am hoping someone may have the solution or at least some suggestions. The laptop will boot up perfectly ok and the monitor will display the Windows XP logo page ( the one with the narrow loading display ). However, from then on the monitor remains blank despite the fact that Windows continues to load right through to the desktop. To prove that XP loads, I connected my CRT monitor to the VGA port on the laptop and Windows displays and works as normal. It also displays and operates in Safe Mode. I have tried the laptop's keyboard monitor switch from LCD to CRT with no luck. I don't think it can be a virus because I have formatted the HD using the "Format and Recovery" program and in any case it would not then display on my monitor. It beats me to think it will also display the " Format and Recovery " program on the Laptop's LCD monitor but not Windows. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. |

Thanks for your quick response Haun . The laptop does not come with an XP disc but has a Recovery program which will reinstall the OEM OS and drivers without losing existing applications, as well as a Format and reinstall and yes I have tried both with no success

Have you tried updating drivers whilst in safe mode?
Might be worth a shot. Also, just as a side note/something to fall back on - is it still under warranty?

Negative on both counts 4D Ollie. I can't go online in safe mode and unfortunately it is long out of warranty.
I am not too bad at fixing PC's but this one beats me. I mean why would it display XP in safe mode but not in normal mode and why show the Windows XP opener screen but not the rest? The only thing I have not tried is to format and reinstall with my own XP cd to see if the same happens but this would destroy the onboard "Recovery " program, so I am hoping someone might come up with the answer before I try it. - Yes, I know it is illegal to do this but it would only be to see if it worked or not and if it did then my grandaughter would buy a retail version which is cheaper than buying another laptop. |

You don't have a "Safe Mode With Networking" option?
It's a bit of a conundrum really - all I can think of is drivers. What really baffles me is that the CRT works just fine.

Many thanks 4d ollie. We learn things every day and this is one of them. I tried troubleshooting my son in law's Pc a while ago and could not get online to raise some drivers, so I just took it that it was not possible on my broadband connection for some reason or other having just transferred to sky but my grandaughters laptop connected straight away. The world is now my oyster and I will reinstall the drivers, particularly the VGA one and see what happens. In case you are interested, I will post this thread with the answer. Many thanks for your suggestion.
