Hi,

I've got a problem that is doing my head in. I'm a tech though not for computers. Well I've got this not so state-of-the-art ERGO MERCURY 2 laptop. The operating system has seriously faulted. I have the disc to sort it out but can't get it to boot from the disk. I've tried going in to the Bios SETUP menu but it's password protected. Is there a way round this problem?

Don't worry it's not nicked, the organization has hundreds of laptops, all makes and sizes, specs, and previous techs have not all applied the generic password as they were meant too, and it's left me in a spot of frustration.

Any help with this matter will be vastly appreciated.
Muchos Grazious,

Most laptops do not have a CMOS battery, therefor you normally have to contact the manufacturer for the procedure to reset the BIOS.

try pressing esc on POST rather than f2 to enter the bios. Been a while since i had the pleasure of dealing with ergo's but it should do the trick. You'll be presented with a select boot device menu.

If that doesn't do the trick, post the exact model number for us and I'll look into it. There are keyboard shortcuts to bypass the password.

Hi

I'm new to this forum but i notice you offered to help to ODi back in Aug with his Ergo Mercury laptop. Well, believe it or not I have the exact same problem.
I've tried the Esc key suggestion but that was unsuccessful. I've also tried all the listed backdoor passwords that are available on the web, but again to no avail.

The problem is that so many of the techy people who set these up never used the same generic password and have now moved on or left the firm. So, I'm wondering if you could point me in the right direction as I seem to have come to a dead end. The brick, sorry laptop, concerned is a Ergo Mercury 700A. I desperately need it to boot from a CD in order to try and repair or patch up the OS in order to retrieve all my data from the hard drive.

Would be grateful if you could help.

NjM
