I'm currently looking around the market at laptops, ones of which I could take to University and use regularly and has decent wireless coverage, memory and also gaming capabilities.

I don't plan on buying just yet, most likely around August. Unfortunately I'm a little overwhelmed with the choices and the information in front of me.

What I want is the following in a model:

- 4 GB Ram
- At least 1 GB of graphic memory
- A decent sound card
- 15.4" display minimum
- Processor speed of at least 2GHz
- Windows XP is preferred if possible, but Vista wouldn't be a huge negative.

I'd use the laptop for the standard PC user tasks; word processing, browsing and also gaming (not too graphics heavy) and watching films, playing DVDs as well etc.

What I want to know is, is there a laptop out there well within this budget right now that I would be able to buy?

I am not picky about where I can buy it from as long as they're reliable and have efficient shipping/courier services.

In most cases going to uni with a laptop like that is not a good idea, unless you have really short classes. In my experience, with bags being as heavy as they are and classes that last a long time, it's better to buy something like a netbook and a small desktop. You'll get a lot more for your money and be able to take notes, etc for 6h+ straight.

If you're dead set on this, some others can probably give you better ideas than I can, but that's just my advice.

I originally didn't plan to use the Laptop for note-taking, rather having it kept in one (or two places at most) and use it for studying, researching, leisure etc. Since I'm studying a literature-based course I'd rather take notes by hand.

Mobility isn't really an issue with the model, as long as it's not incredibly bulky and heavy.

£600 should get you something pretty slick.

Have you had a look at www.ebuyer.com, maybe pick out a few and get opinions on them.

Personally I'd get Intel C2D as a must and a good brand name (HP, Sony, Samsung, Toshiba), then the best of everything else I can afford.

Style wise most laptops look shit and use poor quality plastics, so that's something to watch if it bothers you.

I'll check out ebuyer now, thank you.

How will I be able to tell if the plastics and exterior are poor quality?
