Default Building a laptop?

I never see anyone talk about building a laptop. Are the parts and cases not available or do they cost much more than the prebuilt ones? my buddy just asked about building one and I told him I'd research it. A quick look on Newegg turned up zip for a laptop case.

Custom parts do not exist and getting them from a brand would not be cost effective.

Surely if you had an old laptop you didn't use anymore, but were reasonably happy with the case..

You could in effect just be "upgrading" a few components.. but actually change everything, then in effect you've built a laptop..?

Not really .... you would be restricted to buying components that fit the case, so mobo would probably still need to be purchased from the manufacturer and the mobo would determine/restrict the CPU and Ram you could buy etc.
It would be cheaper/simpler just to buy an updated spec model.

Oh ye.. spose..

Strange how noones ever thought to launch into that area..

To work properly though I suppose all PC Companies.. or a lot of them.. would need to all "launch into it"

Building a laptop is not the same as building a desktop.

99% of people couldn't do it in the same way desktop builders can.

There is no market for it.

You could likely sort of fake it with a really small form factor like pico-ATX in a laptop case. But that's more trouble than it's worth!

Basically - there aren't the parts to do it easily.

I suppose it could sort of be possible, if you bought a load of second hand laptops, then you can take the parts out of some and put them all together to make a new one, however it would be very cost ineffective. And wouldn't be as good as a new laptop as the only parts you could buy to make it even close to a good price would be faults laptops (some components would work) but all those would be old laptops.

Default Building a laptop?

Thanks folks. I figured that was the reason the more I thought about it but wanted to be sure. There are other things I thought were kind of crazy that turned out to be possible.
