Hello and please excuse my utter ignorance of all things technical. It appears that my hard drive is kapuut and I have entrusted it into the hands of someone in my dive club that works in IT to see if he can retrieve the data, and no I hadnt back anything :( 1000's of family photos lost and so many work projects I had done from home stored on it. My questions are
1) whats the chances of retrieving the data and 2) if buy a new hard drive what sort do I buy? My laptop is a Dell D600? 3) The computer had xp all ready on it so i dont have a disc will I have to buy all that software again? Cheers in advanced for any help. |

Honestly, not good, a lot of times dead hard drives need parts and the fitting of them requires a clean lab, which gets expensive. No harm in trying though.

As for a hard drive you need the same type you have currently, in whatever size you have now or bigger if you prefer. Where you running out of space prior to this happening... As for XP, Dell will send you it if you bought the machine new and can prove purchase, otherwise it is difficult. You have the license no. on the base of your machine so you could borrow a CD and it would be legal, except there are many types of XP and the license no.s have to match the version so it can be a pain in the ass. ie; Your Dell licence no. may only work with a specific Dell version of XP.
