Default Compaq Evo N1020v Laptop - New Inverter Problems

my laptop worked fine till 2 weeks ago i have a "compaq evo n1020v" my lcd inverter died so i bought a new one off the net but before i received it i attached a external lcd to it and worked fine no problems then my new inverter arrived i plugged it in and powerd up the laptop and i heard something blow inside it and i could smell that something had burnt out i check the inverter to find they had sent me one for another laptop (acer) which had more pins on the inverter than the evo inverter has. but now when i attached a external monitor i get nothing on the screen i now have the right evo n1020v inverter but i get nothing on the screen . i was wondering if it could be the graphics chip on the motherboard and does anyone know where this chip is located on the mtherboard or will the whole motherboard be dead?
