I have a Compaq Presario 700 laptop. When the laptop is plugged in with the dc adapter the battery charge light flashes orange constantly. When I unplug the dc adapter the laptop immediately powers off. So it leads me to believe the battery is dead. Although in Windows XP Power Meter "Detailed Information for Battery #1" states the battery is at 99%, Battery Name "5535", Unique ID: "1 Compaq 5535" Power State "On-Line" and Manufactor "Compaq". So it seems the laptop is recognizing the battery, but the battery defiantly doesn't have 99% charge, because like I said the laptop turn off imediately when the dc adapter is removed. So, dead battery is the culprit or what? I looked in the manual for the Compaq Presario 700 and could not find any information about a orange blinking battery charge light. Thanks for the help!

Take some sticky tape and a label-sized bit of paper and write "This is one DEAD battery" on the paper and stick it to the battery so you never confuse it for a good one in the future.

Decide whether you ever want to run your Compaq Presario 700 laptop from a battery in the future. If you do you'll need to buy one. Somewhere around $40, at a guess. If you know someone who can solder lugs onto the several actual rechargeable batteries inside the one you labelled you can get him/her to put new batteries into it for you but it's not going to be a lot cheaper and it's a long-winded job. That's what people do if they can't find any new replacements on sale. My System: Tim

Thanks for the response! I figured that was the problem. I now a over sized paper weight with a big label on it reading "This is one dead battery!"
