Dell Inspiron 1100 - Problem with power jack

I have a Dell Inspiron 1100, 4 or 5 years old.

I (apparently) had a problem with my power cable last week and ordered a new one. The new cable came yesterday -- and wouldn't work either. Or so I thought. It seems there's actually some sort of problem with the laptop jack. For awhile today if I "jiggled" the cable around in the jack it would work sometimes, then stop working, now the cable isn't working at all.

What is the problem and is it something I can fix myself?
