I want to boot Ubuntu onto an external usb hard drive so I can use it ad-hoc. My problem is nerves. I've got a Samsung R710 laptop and i've never disconnected a hardrive out of a laptop before, and I don't want to mess it up.

The reason I need to disconnect the internal HDD is a safety precaution so I don't run over the master boot sector of that drive when installing onto the external drive.

Any recommendations, picture/video/advice tutorials from Samsung users would be most welcome, or from people who have tried this before on other laptops, and what happened?
