I'm not sure what happened but a month or so ago my DVD died. I tried updating the drivers and rolling them back and nothing! Its a Compaq something or other, any way, would it be possible to find and install a new drive my self since I'm well outside my warranty window?

yes, definitely
you just need to know if it's IDE or SATA and pick up one at newegg or a similar site, pop the computer open take the old one out and pop the new one in
it's very easy :)
what computer is it, that way if you need help seeing if it's sata, ide, etc, someone can help with that

my fault, I go through "unanswered posts" and didn't realize this was in the laptop forum. Much much more difficult. You can disregard everything I previously said
