So I have to buy a laptop in the next 1.4 years or so, and I'm just wondering about some things to do with how (laptop) technology will perhaps change in this timespan. I would like to get one now, but I'm think that I should wait for a little bit to get one so that technology will become better as well as cheaper. My buget would be $700-900 (American dollars, not sure what in pounds?), and I'm inquiring what you all think that this much money could buy me in the middle of 2008? So what do you guys think?

I'll have a look around Oly, right now it's 2am.

Something to think about though is you say you want to wait to get a better deal, but there is always better technology round the corner, there really is no right time to buy.

If you wait now to get a better deal in a year, you could wait another year from that to get an even better deal... and so it goes on.

Dave.

Nonono, you get me wrong. While I'm saying that I am waiting to get one until then, it's not only because of technology, but that's when I'll need one for college, and I don't need one now so there's no reason for me to buy one now. What I'm asking more, is what do you guys think that laptops will be like a year from now? More of a question of curiosity than anything else, because I know that I will get one then, just excited to see what it'll be like!

Flash hard drives will take off in a big way, a few 2.5 (laptop sized) hdd's have been released already. Less wattage requirements resulting in lower power usage = longer battery life. More impact protection, as it's solid state, than the drives we have now.

Lithium batteries have gone as far as they can go, maybe the hydrogen batteries they've been messing with for the past few years will go past the development stage.

Intel Penryn mobile chips? (45nm)

Vista bugs finally ironed out? :D

Dunno really, i wouldn't expect a huge change except the uptodate chipset/cpu at the time. In general a technology-set comes around every 5 years of so in the world of computing. You're lucky in the fact Intel have the new cpu's on the way and flash disks are on their way this time around.

Would a flash drive as a hard drive be essentially like a whole bunch of RAM at all? Would that make computers faster?
