Ever since I bought this Alienware, it's been nothing but a pain to me. I've not just had hardware problems, but also OS problems, but lets put that to side.
This laptop has been giving me electrical shocks, and they're not just the static electricity kind - no joke. The screen flickers from time to time, also a very annoying issue. The very first time, it even had red lines all over it. The fan is rather noisy, meaning I can't really leave it on overnight w/o me waking up when the fan speed gets boosted up even slightly. A shitload of functions don't work, Alienware INC just "forgot" to tell me they only work on either Vista or Windows Media edition, which I both don't have.. faggots. I'm not happy with the battery consumption. The max I can use this laptop for without having it hooked up to a power outlet, is about 50 minutes, which is PATHETIC. The keyboard layout is wrong, I wanted it US style instead of UK. DVD/CD playing is madness, it takes hours to recognize the damn media and the noise, omagosh.. Oh and, did I mention it weighs 3.4 kilograms (=119.931471 ounces).
So... I've decided to try and sell this laptop, only if I get a reasonable price for it, since I realised I'm just a spoiled brat always looking for perfection. So here's my question; how much is this laptop worth?

It is in PERFECT condition, no scratches nothing. About 3~4 months old, XP Pro pre-installed (no other software as I want to put that on my 'new' laptop I'll get instead of this one), nothing broken at all.

Let me get this straight, you want to sell someone a laptop that gives them electrical shocks and is obviously faulty.

That's right is it?

Err, no.

You say it's in "perfect condition" But it really isn't, is it.

The weight of the unit is quoted on Alienware's site in an easily found place: System spec. Have you been charging/using the unit on battery like you should? Lithium batteries like to be charged between 20-80% or you'll see your battery-life drop. And if you've been using it on a power point with the battery still connected to the unit no wonder the battery life isn't all that.

All gaming laptops have lousy battery life, infact, the longest battery life i've seen in a gaming spec (a Rock) was just over 1hr 15minutes, this was when gaming. It was just over 2hrs otherwise, so your figure of 50mins doesn't surprise me to be honest. Especially if you haven't taken care of the battery as you should.

If that was me, and the unit is still under warranty I'd be sending it back to Alienware.

If it's out of warranty, and you haven't fiddled under the hood of the thing, i'd be contacting your version of Trading Standards.

Er, that was Sony's fault wasn't it? They didn't just make those for Dell.

Nooooo ..... Dell blamed Sony, but Sony claimed it's the way Dell used the batteries in their PC designs ..... full story here ........ believe who you will, but it seems Dell and Apple were the only 2 companies to have problems

Ugh, this uh... sucks.

I have been told that the best is to keep the battery hooked up to a power outlet at all times, so I've tried to do this. The battery life has only dropped down to less than 10% a few times, it's basically around 100% all the time.

Someone made a connection between the flickering screen and the schocks, not sure what it was.. whatever it was, I'm pretty sure that Alienware won't take responsibility for it and just claim it was my fault. I've had some other problems in the past, and they couldn't be bothered to help out either so I doubt they'll do anything useful right now.

This laptop has a year warrenty, been using it for around 3 months now, so Alienware should still be supporting me on this issue. I guess I'll throw my chances on them and get the laptop as good as it can get because it doesn't look like I can get any money for it in its current state.

Thanks for the replies guys, it has somewhat enlightened me.

P.S. that Sony/Dell story was quite amusing. :P

The exploding batteries story is quite old:

http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquir...ding-batteries

It isn't just overheating that can bang them, a jolt or damage can too! But Sony contaminating them so they shorted out didn't help!

And it can and does happen in your phone, watch, PDA, ... too.

Oh, and Panasonic had trouble with Sony batteries too.
