I have a Compaq Presario C700 given to me by a friend to look at and she informs me that she left it on the bed while she made a drink and came back to find it had turned off, was rather warm and smelt 'a bit burny'.

Its has clearly overheated, but it isn't turning on at all (although I was able to recover the data from the HDD which works just fine).

I havent opened it up just yet but would like to ask your advice before I do so I dont waste my time if its a definite dead one.....

Symptoms at this time:

1. Wont turn on.
2. Power supply is OK but when plugged in the powerlight on the transformer goes dim.
3. There is a crackle when the adaptor is plugged into the laptop and the blue LED ring around the power socket briefly flickers and then goes out.
4. There is a light burnt smell, and the fans do not seem to spin up at all however I'm convinced there is the lightest draught from the vent, however it could just be convection.
5. When plugged in, the amber wireless indicator glows really faintly.

Is it completely dead and irrepairable? Or is there any hope of fixing it?

If it is at all fixable, what would be your recommendations.

Would really appreciate any information

Sounds like the DC plug has died and maybe taken part of the motherboard with it. If you're skilled with soldering you could replace that - it's pretty cheap to get a replacement.
