If you've tried to do anything above the bare minimum install then you've ran out of hdd space.
XP requires an absolute minimum of 1.5gb of space. If you try to install the 'typical' or 'full' then you're in trouble. I'd format the drive and start over. But is it really worth it because with any driver installs, office software etc is going to take up the rest of your capacity leaving you nothing, if indeed anything else fits.

XP is going to be useless with that little space.

Yup, you need to format the drive before doing anything else. And just out of interest, how much would you take for the laptop? :p
