I bought a new battery for my Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop(about 4 years old) off ebay. It worked fine for two days, but i mainly kept it plugged into my power adapter during this time, well now two days later my battery is dead as a door nail and kinda smells burnt or hot. I replaced the power adapter with a new one from ebay as well about 2 or 3 months ago. It seems to get a lot hotter than the original Dell one. Do you think this is the reason my original battery went bad (worked fine for 3-4 years) after a while ( i just figured it was time to crap out), and why this new battery only lasted 2 days? I dont see why the computer would allow the battery to overcharge and burn it out though, so this is kinda throwing me through a loop. Any advice would be great before i try spending more money than it is worth trouble shooting the problem.

It's probably just a bad battery. Luck of the draw on eBay, I'm afraid.

Sounds like you bought a cheap, unbranded battery and mains lead.

Get the proper ones for your laptop from the manufacturer and they will last, albeit more expensive.

You get what you pay for I'm afraid.

Thanks for the reply. What do you mean by the "means lead?" Sorry if i sound like a rookie, but new to this board. Thanks.

Maybe i should also let ya guys know that for a while, off and on with the old original battery, i would have to either unplug the power adapter, or remove the battery and put it back in, or a combo of both, in order to start my laptop up. Otherwise i wouldnt get any blinking lights or anything. I dont know if this is relavant or not. Maybe though.
