Default Laptop on All Night

Is it bad for your laptop to keep it on all night? I don't own an i-pod so I leave my laptop on at night so I can listen to music with my headphones while I sleep.

As long as it has good ventilation (ie not next to you in bed with a pillow and duvet :D) its fine. Plenty of people do it for different reasons (although I have to say its the first time I've heard someone say its so they can listen to music!)

Like myself I quite often leave my desktop running so that it can record TV shows, download numerous files, etc.

Basically if it has sufficient cooling, it's fine.

I used to leave my desktop on 24/7, the lappy goes off every night and unplugged from charging.

Laptops have a pretty short life as it is without running them 24/7 and overcharging the battery.

You could get it turn off auto with task scheduler.

say you start listening at 12pm every night you could get it to turn off by 1am say, i dont know how long it takes you to fall asleep or whatever :D but you could adjust the numbers to suit you.

I used to know of someone who strangled themselves sleeping with earphones in. I'm telling you now its a really really really bad idea to sleep with them in.

I've got some ancient Compaq laptop that does WINS and a few other services on our network. Its been running solid for about a year now with only a few restarts for Windows Updates. Its on UPS.

The batteries knackered though

But I wouldn't leave an expensive laptop on 24/7, especially the small ones that get very hot.

I don't really have a choice. If I don't listen to music at night I can't sleep because my room mate snores. Very loudly. The people in the room next to ours have complained about the snoring. The music's the only thing that blocks out the noise.

I have vista. I know how to get to the task scheduler, I just don't know what to do once I'm there.
