I cant turn on my laptop via battery, i have to put the mains in, when i take out the mains the laptop turns off immediately. battery knackered? ive gone through power options and it all looks good

Yup, battery gone mate.

They wear out fast as most people leave the mains in 24/7.

This stops the cells cycling so in future charge it up and run it right down before charging it again.
