i put core temp and real temp on my friends hp pavillion with an intel core 2 dual at 1.66 and he is idling at 74 and loads about 90 i know this is high but is it too high

Laptops arnt my strong point but if he isn't experiencing random restarts, shutdowns, slow periods etc then i wouldnt worry.

well not really thats the danger point of frying the cpu for example you shouldnt take a q6600 past 70 because it will dramatically lower life but 90 is shutdown point

its my friends laptop he has canceled the insurance and his dad doesn't like me so he wont let me re-apply thermal paste

Same applies as a desktop, clean the CPU fan/heatsink.

They clog up even more on lappys.

Why doesn't his dad like you? and I'm sure he wont miss it if your friend was to accidentally leave it at your house.

because i know more than him about technology and he doesn't like that, he believed that apple corrupted windows with itunes because his laptop diskdrive wouldn't open so he deleted some keys in the registry

laptops do run hot but i think that is still abit too hot
i dont own a laptop but my girlfriend dos top spec 1 eneyway i re applied thermal paste .cant belive all there is for cooling is a pipe leading to a small heatsink with a small fan and cleaned all dust and it drop'd only by 2'c
terns out she had 3 anti viruses running also loads of startup programs that were just not needed girls for yah a
i also treated her to a notepad cooler (int she looky ,its pink so she happy) and its bin ok ever since
