Hello

Can anyone tell me the process of removing the hard drive in an Acer Aspire 5630?

I'm upgrading my hard drive to a 160GB. I found the hard drive but I cant see how to actually remove it and their is nothing in the books supplied.

Any help please?

Cheers

You should be able to see some small screws holding it in place, remove them and pull the drive free.

I can advise better if you post a photo.

Use a screwdriver to lift the right hand side up, then pull it to the right away from the connector.

I cannot see any screws, if there are any, remove them first.

I cant seem to lift the drive up, maybe its me being to worried about breaking it but it doesn't seem to lift with ease.

Also whats the black ribbon bit on the right?

The ribbon is normally used to lift the drive from it location.

It does come out, don't be afraid to give it some grief.

I'll try that in a sec.

Also I used Acronis True Image Home to clone my current hard dive on to an USB external hard drive, once the process finished I tried to boot from the external hard drive and the Windows XP loading screen came up but the screen then flickered a few times, one I could see was a blue screen and then a black screen came up saying that Windows did not start successfully, recent hardware or software changes may have caused this. Which then it gives different options to choose from like to start up into safe mode, last known good configuration or normally.

Would I be getting this because I started up the computer with both the original hard drive and external hard drive connected? Or is it a completly different reason?

The likely cause it that the clone did not work properly, I'd also try the cloned drive in the PC rather than booting of it externally.

Ok removed the drive with no problem, I just pushed it to the right to disconnect it from the connectors and them lifted it up.

What it looks like I will have to do is reclone to the external drive then clone external drive to my new 2.5" drive. Only thing in doing that is it takes about 3 hours to clone so it looks like a tomorrow job. I cant test the current clone as the drive is a 3.5" drive.

Or the other way I guess is to buy an 2.5" caddy and just clone the new drive and leave out the 3.5" external drive.

So that message is nothing to do with it being a different hard drive then?

The message is hardly descriptive, it could be related to anything.

I have given the most likely causes in my post above.
