My sister has a Acer Aspire 5920G Laptop , she says it cuts out frequently (the fan turns off and the screen goes black). I've never had this when I've used it although I have noticed the fan is noisy and the laptop gets very hot, it feels very warm on the keyboard. I've had a look at the fan and there doesn't seem to be much fluff so I'm thinking it's the fan and I'm tempted to replace it.
My only concern is that it if the systemboard controls the fan it might actually be the system board that's faulty. Just after a second opinion really, anyone have any suggestions?
Cheers

You could download Coretemp and see what kinda temps you are getting, you should check to see if there is anyway in the bios to change the fan speed?

does sound like the fan
it sounds like the ball bearings helping it to spin may have been worn down or faulty
causing the fan to not spin correctly or slower
causing excessive heat then finally shut down
but your laptop seems to be very new so might not be general wear and tear, may have just been a faulty fan
definatly worth trying to replace as usaully very cheap
nice laptop btw

I know it sounds stupid, but, which happens first?

Because it could be that it is actually overheating, and shutting down to protect itself, or it could be something completely unrelated to heat.

If you turn it straight back on again,
a) Will it turn on?
b) Is it a noticeably shorter period before it goes black again?

Download coretemp as mentioned and let us know the temps.

If it's getting very hot it sounds like it could well be overheating. You say you have checked the fan and there is no fluff, but have you checked all the other vents?
