Hi Laser.

Where exactly during boot does the screen freeze? (describe the screen please).

During this 'freeze' does the hdd light come on?

Unfortunately this could be one of many things.

But yeah, we'll give it a go. :)

Firstly, disconnect any peripheral you may have attached (usb hub, mouse, external hdd etc).

If you don't have any, or once you've removed them turn on the lappy and enter the bios (probably F8) and before the windows screen, you'll get a prompt.

There will be a menu selection advising "Reset to default" select this then "Exit saving current settings".

Have you set up any partitions? as this could have a bearing. XP SP2 has been known to throw a wobbly and decide your license isn't valid when you do this.

Has the lappy had a knock? During boot up into XP your cpu will be running at peak, if it (or it's heapipes/fan) are loose it will be a problem.

Do the above and give me a shout back.

Not withstanding Alex's excellent advice F8 will take you into Safe Mode, try "Last known good configuration" at this point.

Try F2 or Del to enter the bios or check carefully when booting to the POST screen when it says; "Press F2 (example) to enter Setup".

What make is the laptop?

It wasn't that excellent, I got the commands for entering the bios and safe mode mixed up. . Apologies Laser.

I'll leave this one to Wolfeymole, he's much more experienced at this type of thing (os's, partitions etc) than I.
