I apologise in advance for the lack of technical terminology used...!

1.The screen cracked on my HP Pavilion laptop, so for the last few months have been plugging an external monitor in to use the laptop. Worked perfectly, screen jumped to the external monitor automatically. Brilliant. Then about a week ago my laptop started going a bit tits up, freezing erratically etc so I went on a massive virus hunt/clean up mission. Then it started not sending the signal to the external monitor automatically (but usually restarting sorted it out). Then, the other day, it just wouldn't send the signal at all. Have been trying for 3 days now. The monitor/cable works fine with different computers, but my laptop doesn't want to send any signal to any external monitor (even pressing function key etc). Does any one have any suggestions on how to solve that problem (apart from gettin a new screen/laptop) etc... The laptop still turns on, recognises discs (but obviously can't use it because can't see the screen).

2. Was wondering if there was any way to transfer files from my laptop to my PC (obviously without using the File transfer wizard or any visual method involving visually using laptop as I can't set it up on a laptop I can't see the screen on...) And yes I know I should have backed up my important files externally, but I'm an idiot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Remove the laptop hard drive - 15 min job, pretty easy.

Then buy a USB to laptop 2.5 IDE adaptor and plug it into another machine.
