Hey guys, i'm looking for a little help. Creative thinking would be great. I'm running an Acer Travelmate 240 which is 4 years old ish. It was a present so don't anyone comment on what I should have got.

Anyhoo, it seems to be dying. Running much hotter than it used to, slowed down massively and I just need it to last a little longer. I'll give you a quick run down on what I run on it.

AvG Antivirus, free edition(what did you expect, me pay???)
Ad aware.
works 2002
Firefox
PowerDVD
Windows media player

and that pretty much sums up what I need my laptop to run. Only issue is it's not running it very well. I have managed to speed her up a little by following the guide using msconfig etc but she's still not doing great.

All my music is on a philips 200Gb external harddrive FYI.

Basically, all I want is for my computer to rapidly do what I ask it to. I don't want to play games but I do have some engineering software to run. Elfen if it means anything to anyone. Not resource hungry thankfully. Always fancied Linux but some engineering programs may not run(To my knowledge) and I fear there may be compatability issues between XP Word and word run on Linux(I think it can be run on Linux).

Basically, don't know what I'm talking about too much but any hints tips would be great. System restore didn't do much last time I did it so might it be hardware?

Cheers,

Dave

Download, install and run this program from the download section
It should help repair and speed up your system

Whoa, thats a great program, already running so much better. It's running at the same speed it used to but with AVG scan operating, can't wait to see the speed when it's finished.

Darkseth-

Did you check if the fan works? I remember all Acer laptops having a fan in the back that runs all the time.

Whirring sound does happen most of the time. Although does stop then get louder after a few seconds of peace and quiet. Might need to dust the insides.
