Just got a good deal on a laptop, but it has Vista. I think it is sucking up all the memory in the laptop. It runs fine plugged in, but when I unplug it you can tell it slows down. I'm thinking about dropping down to XP temporarily until all the bugs are worked out of Vista. Does anyone know if this is a smart idea with a laptop? are there compatibility issues? Any different steps formatting a laptop? Thanks for the help guys.

It's not Vista. It's your processor throttling itself when you're not plugged into AC power to save battery life.

What make is the laptop and did it come with Vista preinstalled? If so you may have trouble finding drivers for it
I have mine set up for dual boot so that I can use both operating systems

Im not pleased with it plugged in the wall either. I understand the battery slows it down, I just dont know much about Vista and heard its a memory hog. I'll see if i can find system specs. Dual boot may be a good idea to find out if it is vista causing the slow down of the computer, as well as driver compatibility.

It's not Vista, with XP it will still slow down when unplugged from the mains.
