... would be great to know what brands are currently rated vs hated!
I've always got my laptop provided by work, but now I need to buy something for my mum so need to start doing some research. At work I loved my IBM thinkpad - really good screen, always worked, good battery lift even if the styling was a bit old fashioned. When it finally conked out our new provider is Dell and its rubbish - had it less than a year and its already needed a replacement battery and a reinstall. For my mum - she only needs a basic laptop for internet and email, plus a built in webcam for skype so I don't want to spend cash on functionality she won't use. The cheapest brands seem to be Acer and Compaq - what do people think of these brands???? |

Acer seems to be a perfectly fine brand. At the risk of sounding ignorant, so long as it's not an IBM, Dell or Alienware, all laptops are pretty similar under the hood anyway.

I would have agrred with Acer, but in the last year or 2, they seem to suffer more than their fair share of breakdowns .... I guess they are using cheaper parts in the recession, to try claw back some money !

It sounds as if a Samsung NC10 or EEE 1000HE would be a good fit.

Yep .... if we're including Netbooks, I agree with Carbon, the Samsung NC10 is a great, well built machine.
