| Hello Everyone, this is my first post and i hope someone can help. My brother in law gave me a Dell Latitude D400 (which i am giving to my daughter for Xmas) yes, times are tough. The laptop was in perfect condition apart from a useless hard drive which i had to replace. I installed the new hard drive, which already had XP on it (out of a sony Vaio) Everything works great, yes my Dell thinks its a Vaio, but its all great apart from the keyboard. most keys are working but the cursers, the enter key, delete key and a few others are not. I am thinking that this has something to do with the drivers (of which there are still a few vaio ones on the system) I have tried to find a keyboard driver at Dell, but i have downloaded everything and i still have the keyboard problem. My brother in law swears the keyboard is not broken, so if anyone out there can suggest something, that would be great. I can just about give my daughter a second hand laptop for xmas, but not one with a dodgy keyboard!!!!!!! Thanks. |

| You should have really done a clean install of XP from disk. It may still be possible though. Download all the drivers for the Dell and install them. Especially the motherboard ones.

| try the harddrive on something else to see if its just the drivers there may be a problem with your keyboard |

| Hello, Thanks very much for your input, i have done a clean install and that has removed all traces of Vaio. I have downloaded many drivers and the laptop is now working at 99%, there are still a couple of keys on the keyboard which are not great, but funnily enough they work on occasion and they work when i press shift down first. Perhaps this means i need to replace the keyboard? I will keep trying but its almost tip top so less of a problem now. If anyone has any other ideas, i would still love to hear them!! Thanks again. |

| If they work on occasion, it would suggest the keyboard is somewhat faulty. But as long as the required keys work, then it should make a good present for someone :) What keys exactly don't work?

| The keys are the enter key (i know, useful) and the delete! o key is occasionally broken, i think i will get a can of compressed air and give all the keys a blast, i guess its possible there is dust or dirt under there? anyway, she will love it and i can replace the keyboard at a later date! |

| Sounds like a faulty keyboard to me.

| Cleaning the keyboard might help if it's just dust or something that's messing up the contacts. Otherwise, it sounds like the keyboard is definitely faulty. |
