i have a compaq presario v2000 and it keeps melting the part that plugs into the laptop on the power cord only after maybe 10 minutes of it being plugged in, the metal part you plug in gets so hot it will litterally burn you if you touch it. anyway the first cord got ruined so i bought another one and its the same one itd for the presario v2000 and it started to melt it this time too really fast and it seems like the laptop is only getting extremly hot like that when i have it plugged in, when i use a battery it seems ok but as soon as i plug it in it gets really hot so if someone could tell me anything at all i could try to fix this problem i would really apreciate it. thanks.

At this point I would check both your DC plug (make sure it's clean), as well as the surface you're using the laptop on. If it's overheating, you'll have much worse problems than hot cords. It also *might* be the outlet, but it's unlikely. It's normal for the metal part to be very hot, but not actually melt the cord.

Failing those two, I'd get Compaq to look it over and possibly replace the DC plug or adapter.

Yup .... I would suspect maybe there's a poor/loose socket on the Laptop, with poor electrical contact, causing it to arc, which would generate the kind of heat you are describing.

Unless you are competent with electronics, soldering etc., it sounds like a job for the local Laptop Repair Centre.
