Default Priorities- Ram vs Processor in similar laptops.

Hi there!

I'm buying a first laptop for mainly school work, but also msn and a small amount of gaming (unlikely to play any new games on it though, maybe games from a couple of years ago) and have found two very similar laptops within my budget.
They both have 400mb video memory (though only 128mb is dedicated) and both will be running vista home premium.

One of the laptops has Core 2 Duo Processor 1.66GHz speed, 667MHz bus, 2MB cache
and the other has a Core Duo with the same specs.

The Core 2 Duo however, only has 1GB RAM in comparison to the Core Duos 2GB RAM.

Which would anyone think more important of the two, the extra gig of RAM or the Core 2 duo processor? I've heard that Core 2 duo is considerably faster, but not sure which will have more effect...

Thank you to anyone who replies :)

As it stands, seeing as Vista is your o.s, I'd be going for the lappy with the 2GB ram.

But.

Seeing as ram is cheap, even for lappy's, I'd definately get the one with the Core2 (much much better cpu in comparison), and get an extra gig of ram separately.

I'd go with the better processor, can always add more RAM later, you can't add more processor.

Hahhahaa...

Also with 1GB and Vista you can turn down the whistles and bells graphically until you get the RAM.

Oh brilliant thanks for the responses! :D

I'm not likely to get the chance (aka money) to upgrade my laptop until I need a new one...
Does this mean RAM would be a better choice for me?

Also, just found a better deal for a laptop with both core 2 duo and 2gb ram, but only 128mb shared video memory instead of what I mentioned before (400mb video memory of which 128mb is dedicated)...
Does this mean I wont be able to run any games at all?
Or is this the better option by your view?

Thank you so much for the help! :D

Yum.

Ps. sorry I took so long to reply- I have a very dodgy internet connection at the moment between the PC and router.

if you're not into gaming hardcore, anything that can run vista will suit you fine. the 3rd option is most likely best

If you haven't already ordered... have a look at either ebuyer.com or dell.co.uk

There are some really good laptop offers on Dell's site, and they also offer the option to stick with XP.

I'd advice everyone to stay with XP until at least Vista Service Pack 2 is released - or computers come default with 2GB RAM minimum.

Yeah thanks I have done and ordered differently.
Now I'm getting both for just a small amount more :)

Thanks again everyone for being so helpful!
I am getting Vista though... I'll have to hold out for bug fixes...

Yum.
