Mods: please feel free to move this thread since I'm not sure if this is the right place for it!

Basically, a friend of mine has a problem with her laptop, which is an Acer Aspire 5538 running Vista. Whenever the laptop is turned on, it announces that there was a problem with start-up and gives you the choice of starting normally or booting into safe mode. When booted into windows normally, the Vista splash screen appears but then the screen remains grey, although the cursor is up and can be moved as normal. It doesn't get to the login screen. Even when the laptop is booted into Safe mode the same thing happens. We have tried various options, including unplugging the laptop, unplugging the ethernet cable, and even removing the battery and putting it back in, with no success.

The laptop was last used succesfully at 17:00 GMT and no hardware changes have been made, nor have any programs been installed or uninstalled. The last progam installed was Skype, which was a few days ago, and apparently the laptop worked fine afterwards.

Any solutions welcome.

Thanks,

Tom
