I have a HP laptop - Dv2000 - that has a very full hard drive so I decided to replace it. So I bought a new hard drive and an external hard drive enclosure so that I could clone the existing hard drive. This took a while but it all went swimmingly.
The problem I had though was frustratingly mechanical. When I removed the old hard drive it was in a small hard drive bay I assume to keep the thing firmly in position. The hard drive is held into this bay with four small screws. The first two came out easy but the other two will not budge and the more I try to get them out the more they disintegrate. So now I'm left with my old hard drive stuck in a bay so I can't use it in the external enclosure I bought as a spare and I also can't get my new hard drive in as without a bay it will not be secure. Is it possible to buy a replacement bay? Or do any of you know a way to remove stubborn screws without destroying my old hard drive? Please help. |

I have a DV1000 - the screws in question are linked to the cover for the bay, at least on mine, so messing with it significantly shouldn't ruin the hard drive. You might try a screw extractor or something.

On mine the screws for the cover and the ones holding the drive in the bay are separate. Thanks for trying though. Any idea if it's possible to purchase a replacement bay?

Oh! I think I know what you're talking about now: the enclosure sort of deal that wraps around the HDD. It should be possible to get another one: it may be in fact just be a standard 2.5" to 3.5" HDD enclosure/adapter. The real problem will be if you don't have one of these too, because that adapts regular SATA HDDs to the connector standard for the laptop and I'm pretty sure without taking off the enclosure you can't take that piece off and use it on the new one.

I can get that adaptor thing off so I don't need another one of them. I dunno why it would be a 2.5" to 3.5" enclosure adaptor in a laptop. I might have to try a screw extractor but I don't fancy having a drill that close to my hard drive.

Yeah, it's weird, I don't know what else it would be though. Some sort of proprietary caddy doesn't make sense, and from memory the dimensions match up with a regular 3.5" HDD.

I think this is what it is:
http://www.bixnet.com/hpdvcov3saha.html $50 seems a bit steep. I'll try the screw extractor and see how it goes. |

No problem. I'd send you mine but I'm selling my laptop and I'm sure they would object to a loose HDD :). Good luck.
