Hi, I have an ACER laptop that has a defective mother board. (the laptop shows no sign of power !) My work and photos are on the hard drive. Is it possible to remove the hard drive and use it as an external drive with another laptop ? If 'yes', is it a relatively easy thing to do for a complete novice ?

Sure is. If you want to use it externally, just buy a 2.5" USB HDD enclosure, pull the hard drive out, put it in the enclosure and hook it up, and then connect it to the new laptop.

Hi and many thanks for the reply.

I shall look into the technicalities of pulling the hard drive and I'll look around for the enclosure.

I'm only assuming the mother board is at fault because of the total lack of any signs of life.

Job done ! removing the drive was a doddle and I am now able to retrieve everything on my wifes laptop. This will do until I can afford to have a technition look at it.

thanks again.
