Hi Guys,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR11M and have just re-formatted after experiencing the BSOD. At first i had done a factory restore which did not cure the problem, so i decided to install Vista from scratch. After some use i got the BSOD again!!!

So...... im pretty much stuck from here, however my machine will not boot from CD now, i have set the BIOS to force boot from CD, all the usual happens, comes up with "press any key to boot from CD" Windows setup files begin to load and then nothing the next interface screen does not appear.

I know now this is probably some sort of hardware fault but how can i diagnose it so i can fix it?

Any tips, help appreciated

Smitherz

EDIT: Oh and the orignal BSOD error was Kernel_Inpage_Data_Error

If you get the BSOD after a fresh restore or OS install you 99% have a hardware fault.

What is the code on the BSOD screen?

Sorry guys i no longer have the whole code on the BSOD screen, I can't get it up again because i can no longer boot

Is there any way of telling what hardware has had it?

What is the rest of the error? From a quick look it would appear the hard drive has errors or is faulty.

Did you do a FULL format (Actual deletion of the partitions) when you did the new Vista Install?

I didn't recore any other parts of the error.

No it was a quick format, I wanted to do a full but the option wasn't on the disk as far as i could see. It literally took a couple seconds which i thought was strange.

I have tried running a CHKDSK but it does not complete, it gets stuck on phase 3 around 12% so i knew the hard drive was up.

I full format may help me bit i can't get it back up.

Thanks,

Sorry one more question if the hard drive has had it then why wont it boot from CD now? I took the hard drive out of the equation in the BIOS surely it should still load the windows setup?

Im booting from the Vista CD, i have also tried booting from a vista recovery just incase it was the CD none have worked. I'm not sure if the Mobo is knackered now.

I doubt it. Booting of CDs can sometimes be troublesome. Just double check it is set to boot off CD in the BIOS, that the CD is the first boot device and make sure you press a key to boot off the CD when it says to. Some mobos also have the option to load a boot menu at startup, somthing like press F3 for boot menu, then hit CD.
