Hi,

My Toshiba Qosmio has suddenly started to produce a background noise like a badly tuned in radio.

At start up the Qosmio screen appears with no background noise. Once windows XP has started a background noise suddenly appears. I have not recently installed anything. I have tried recovery to an earlier point and the noise is still there. I have however discovered that if I mute the line in then this background noise vanishes and normal sounds resume. I havent altered any of my sound settings apart from when I found it was the line in causing the problem. So I muted the line-in. I have nothing plugged into the line in socket.

Any advice?

some sound cards including built in use the line in for rear speakers, if you are only using 2 speakers configure this and leave the line in muted if you have to. let me know if this was the case as i would lie to add this in a little room of knowledge in my brain. <Don't post email addys.>

The noise suddenly started without altering any of the set-up. So something is amiss somewhere. Some audio circuit is failing or failed. But I can confirm by muting the line in feed the sound is gone. I must state that this is a change to the set-up that the laptop has always had since new.
