Hi all,

HP Pavilion zt3000
768 MB RAM
Windows XP Professional

Well I dropped my comp 3 times over the last 2 months....the first time it stopped working I opened the Hard drive and the RAM compartment, blew a bit of dust and placed them back safely (I opened the compartment in the first place coz the comp wouldn’t turn on...the IDE light would flicker and the hard disk compartment would make a sound and wont start)...surprisingly, it worked and has been working well since then...in fact, I used to get a blue screen error previously which also miraculously stopped after that (i suppose the dust accumulated in the RAM compartment was the cause of the error)...the second time it fell, there hasn’t been a problem and it continued to work....the 3rd time it feel about a week or so back didn’t also cause any problems and it continued to work until last night when I was watching a movie and while I moved the computer (i guess it kind of jerked) and froze. I did what I always do when it freezes - switch it off! But it wouldn’t start after that and the same thing happened - the IDE icon flickered and it wouldn’t start...so I opened the RAM and the hard disk compartment and put them back in place. But this time it didn’t help. I reopened the hard disk compartment at least half a dozen times but didn’t help. The funny bit is the sound has been coming from the optical drive (oh! I forgot to mention that a CD has been in the drive for the past week) and I managed to get the CD out of the drive but its the optical drive that has been making the sound....when I keep the comp tuned on for a while, the sound invariably stops and the light disappears too but the comp doesn’t turn on.

Can someone please tell me what to do? I have a lot of important info that I haven't created a back-up for (classic!) but more importantly I need to get my comp up and running ASAP!

Thanks much for your time and patience!

after the knocking around, the head of the hard drive could have hit the disks in the hdd, thus causing a damaged disk, and the noise would be coming from the CD drive because if no bootup files can be found on the hdd, the next place it would look is the optical drives, so the sound you will be hearing, is it attecpting to spin up a disk and read from it. My advice, would be to take the hdd out, and try it in a different laptop, or vise versa (preferably both), and then come back and let us know the results. That way, we can hopefully work out the actual problem.
