What am I doing wrong here?
Hi all. Please bear with me because I actually know very little about computers... if this is in the wrong place, it's probably because I didn't understand the terminology enough to put it in the right board...
So. The last laptop I had was custom-built. I accidentally did some really stupid stuff, and kept on overheating it and basically baked it. It was doing this thing where when I would change the angle of the screen, it would flash different colors, and sometimes go off completely... I assume this means some kind of short in whatever connects the monitor to the main body of the computer, am I right? Well, in any case the laptop is dead.
I got another laptop a little over one year ago. It was humming along great. Then maybe a month ago, guess what it started doing. Uh-huh, more color-changing. It started out just once in a blue moon, and now it's pretty much every time I move the monitor... sometimes I have to spend a minute or two looking for a position where large chunks of the color aren't red or fuschia. And sometimes, it will just turn completely white with a few tiny stripes down the screen. At that point, I close it and leave it for a while, and when I open it back up it's always fine. It seems to get worse the longer the laptop has been turned on, so shutting down for about 20 minutes will mostly solve the problem (but who wants to have to shut down every half-hour or so?)
If it makes any difference, it's an Acer Aspire. It hasn't been modified at all. And my sister got the exact same computer and has had no problems like this. So I'm thinking there must be something I'm doing that's just flat-out stupid that's frying my laptops. I'm not doing anything the manuals tell you not to, but two laptops to have the same problem in a row makes it seem like I must be causing it. If anyone has any ideas as to what might be happening and what I can do to stop this one from imploding on me, it'd be much appreciated.
(Also, just off hand, does anyone happen to know how much it might cost to get a problem like this fixed?)
