| Hi, so I have a 4MB/s adsl high-speed internet connection and 512KB/s upload speed and the modem used is the Alcatel Speed Touch Home. Also I have a Linkys WRT54GC Ver2.0. Now my issue is that I do not get the full speed that I am supposed to get. Been doing some internet speed tests but all give me a mere 50KB/s download speed which is respect to 4MB/s is way SLOW :( When I am on my laptop and use the WiFi and try the internet speed test, I would get the speeds that I am supposed to get. So my question is, is the modem (Alcatel) old and does not support 4MB/s, if so could you suggest me another modem that would support up to 10MB/s cos next Jan I would be upgrading to 6MB/s and thus I would like to use its full potential not be limited to very low speeds. Hope someone could help. Thank you. |

| I'm a little confused .... you say that when using a Laptop, via wifi, you achieve the desired speed ..... surely this is connecting to the Linksys WRT54gc, linked through the same Alcatel Speed Touch Modem .... or am I missing something

| @philthomas Yes you understood well. From the tower there is the internet cable which is connected to the Linkys and then there is another wire from the Linkys conntected to the Alcatel one. So, I do not understand why :( |

| As far as I can ascertain, the Speedtouch Modem is good for up to an 8mb connection.

Also as the Laptop reaches desired speeds through the same modem, it is unlikely IMO that the Modem is the cause of your problem. How are you measuring your download speeds and are you comparing like for like ? ...... i.e. are you testing your Desktop and Laptop at the same time of day/night ? ...... how many tests have you conducted ? ..... it can often be the case that poor speeds will be experienced at peak times & weekends and normal speeds will be acieved after midnight or during the day. It's also possible that your ISP has problems from time to time. The only other thing to check if you are certain your tests have been scientific, is to check your cabling paying special attention to the cable connecting the Router to the PC. Sometimes extra long cable runs or poor quality cabling can cause problems. Finally conduct some further tests, using this website and see what transpires : http://www.speedtest.net/ HTH My System: Home Build

| If you are on cable then ONLY your cable supplier can provide the modem you need. Call them and ask if your current equipment is suitable, if it isn't they normally give modem upgrades free of charge.
