Belkin wireless g router - No, or slow connection

Guys,

A guy in my wifes the office (Cisco) (you know the type ) gave me the above router for my home use. Since connecting my Laptop (DELL VOSTRO) it grinds to a halt when connecting , or doesn`t allow me to connect to the most basic pages- eBay etc.

I know it`s not the PC as I can connect elsewhere with out a hitch, so even by my non IT powers of deduction it can only point to the router.

Of course the office guy is incognito as it`s not his top priority (understandably), but sure is frustrating as f@@k for me as I work from home and so does the good lady. She connects no bother (as I think it is configured for laptop as she works for same company), yet I have to ask her to disconnect then I plug the data cable back into to the modem.

Either I get help on the this or the router get it

One last thing, if you can help can you please speak non IT, just good old fashioned English will do for me

Did you access the router (log in to it) and setup the security or wireless settings? If not either read the manual for it or try logging in from the wired system by typing in in your browser in the line for web site address 198.162.0.1 and see if it connects to the router. If not read the manual on how to access the router from the wired system and then go into the setup and set up security etc. It is not advisable to allow an open wireless without passwords or such as then anyone nearby (like a neighbor) could use your wireless to connect to the internet and use your time and download MB.

So you actually have to log in to the router to set it up. Did you get a cd with setup software with the router? You should have. If not try the 198.162.0.1 (this should be the IP address of the router) in your browser and go through the screens for settings etc. Save your changes and settings and write down the password to log in (usually just the enter key first time accessing but you should change this) and the WEP or whatever security password (could be quite long) as you'll need this one for the wireless devices to access the internet.

Wait. The better way would be look at the router's manual or under the router itself for the router IP + username + password.

Ok now, once you have these 3 things ROUTER IP, ROUTER USERNAME, ROUTER PASSWORD. (You'll also need connection to the router e.g your wifes laptop)

Do the following:

1. Enter the ROUTER IP on top the address bar in internet explorer (or a browser of your choice) without the http:// would do.
2. Enter the ROUTER USERNAME + PASSWORD when asked
3. Look at the wireless setting and change the wireless mode to WPA mode and set your own WPA key and a SSID (name of your connection) that you can remember.
4. Save it
5. Try connecting your laptop now
6. Tada working connection

You should get that guy to look at it if you can. Its quite hard helping over the forum on problems like it.

Also ..... have you tried just plugging in an Ethernet Cable, between your Laptop and one of the ports on your Router ?
