Hey guys, i have 2 weird things that have happened to my computer recently, i dont know if they are related at all, but they could be and i was hoping that someone could help.

When i start my computer, it usually omits 1 short beep from the bios, recently it has been making 2 short beeps and then just continues as normal.

Once loaded everything appears to be ok and works fine, all but the internet... The icon in the bottom right corner displays local connection only and sometimes switches to limited or no connectivity but never displays that i am actually online.. I dont know whether the change in bios beeping and this internet issue are linked....

When i look at the back of the computer where the Ethernet cable is plugged in, i see a green light, and a flashing orange light, so it is definatley plugged in and appears to be working...

I have tried the connection from 2 different comuter partitions so i dont think its any settings ive changed, ive tried on XP and Windows Server 2008.

As well as this i have tried another computer with the same cable and it works fine, so i know that the cable is not damaged.

I really hope that someone will be able to help me here, looking forward to your replies.

Thanks again!

David.

The 2 beeps you hear at boot up are most probably due to bad Ram.

Try reseating your Ram and/or swapping it around, if more than one stick.

The loss of Internet may or may not be related, but let's take it one step at a time and try to solve the beep error code first.

Thanks for the reply.

I have managed to solve the beep error code, it was actually telling me that the bios time and date was wrong or something like that, i was able to correct that and the beep is back to normal.

The internet is still not working, i believe my previous post is a little confusing so just to recap:

Internet doesnt work on my computer, i get either local network only, or limited connectivity... I have 2 partitions on the computer, one running windows xp and one running windows server 2008, i have tried to access the internet via both OS's, so i dont think it is a software change.... The back of the computer shows a green and orange light when the network cable is plugged in.

I have tried the cable in another computer and it works perfect, so its not the cable.

I am convinced it is something to do with hardware and i hope it can be troubleshooted with your help :)

If not...I can always buy a cheap network card and see if that works.

Thanks again for the reply and the help. Looking forward to more answers.

OK that's a good start.

A few questions .... how are you connecting to the Internet ..... i.e. are you using a Router or just a Modem ? and who is your ISP ?

OK, when you say "tried the cable in another computer and it works perfect, so its not the cable", do you mean the other computer connects to the Home Hub ok ?

I'm not over familiar with BT's Home Hub, but I'm sure others here will be.
Have you any Firewall running on the problem PC, that may be blocking the connection ?

Also .... have you checked in Device Manager that your Network Card is enabled and working properly

Device Manager says everything is running correctly, and yes, the other computer is able to connect to the hub without a problem.

I have not really thought about the firewall, i will disable it and see if anything changes, i will get back to you on that one.

Thanks.

I have disabled the firewalls and any virus protection, but still i am not able to get onto the internet... I just get shown limited or no connectivity and then local connection, and it switches between the 2 randomly.

I purchased a cheap network card, that works perfect so i think it may have been the Ethernet port on the mobo that may have been faulty :)

Thanks for the help and support though :)
