I am currently with AOL Silver 2mb/s. I have run several speed tests and I am only ever getting 480kb/s.

I have tried live help a few times and first off I was given a list of things to do, most of which I do anyway (clear cache, temp files, defrag etc.).

On Friday the second person I spoke too said they were rolling 2mb/s out and that I had not yet got it !! He would contact the relevant department and I would have 2mb/s within 48 hours.

Needless to say, 48 hours later and its sill 1/2 meg speed.

I have a technician phoning me tomorrow, to go through things with me. To be honest though I'm not sure its the gear or my computer. Any helpful hints on what might be wrong, greatly appreciated.

Part of me thinks that they just don't give people the full 2mb/s, most people don't notice and AOL saves a fortune????

Clearing the temp files etc Thwapy has nothing to to do with the speed that AOL should provide you.
The ratio of quoted speed to actual speed is disgusting mate.
There may be a problem with the line and that's down to BT but AOL should say so if it's ok at their end.
I truly would look at obtaining another ISP.

I knew 'do this and do that' was bulls*it, thanks for confirming it!

I agree that it could be BT but they have no way of checking the line do they? Surely only BT can check it?

Any suggestions on what to do?

As for changing ISP, we are only 1/2 way through a 12 month contract. To be fair the connection has been really reliable (touching wood as typing).

I used to be with BT and it was just so poor!

Well I pay £14.99 a month for a 4mb connection, they claim it could be 8mb dependant on how near to the exchange you are but I can live with it.

So do you have any ideas on what MIGHT effect the speed, would RAM? They gave me all this boll*cks and I would like some advice from someone I trust on here, so when they ring tomorrow I can tell them they are talking poo!

My system specs are a 2.5 celeron with 512mb of ram Thwapy, if you can beat that, and most people can, then you should have no problems.

Err not at the moment ! I have my new pc on the way, however the laptop is running Pentium M 1300Mhz with 256 MB ram.... But I know that this is still a good enough spec!

That is true mate.

I recently got this box of tricks I'm on now but before I was running on a 1gb celeron and 256 and the net speed was still the same.

The pages took longer to load because of the machine speed that's all.
I know what I said about clearing the temp internet files etc but it should go without saying that one would do that anyway.

Just spend nearly an hour being told complete lies by AOL.

I think thats rubbish, then the fourth guy was adamant that it was my computer. The last guy realised that I did know a bit and said it was a fault with BT line. Rubbish again, he finally told me I'd be getting 2mb/s within 48 hours. Its a miracle !!!

Doubt that I'll get it in 48 hours............... and the process will start over !

They would lie to you Thwapy, any ISP would do the same but AOL is famous for it.
They know exactly what your cooking at at your end, based on a normal BT line connection.
You have had 4 supposed techs, lol, tell you entirely different storys.
Seriously think about a new ISP mate fast.
