Ok. Well, we've got a BT Homehub, as you might have guessed from the title of the thread. But thats working perfectly, whereas the one in my uncle's house is not. The hub randomly stops transmitting a wireless signal (all the lights at the front stay normal) and the computer stops recognising it, then it starts again, works for 15 seconds then stops again. The weird thing is it only seams to do it after about 8:30 pm and its absolutely fine during the day. If the hub was losing the internet connection, it should at least keep transmitting a wireless signal, right? So wtf is wrong with the damn thing??

Oh yes and another thing. He's replaced the standard flexible cable with a much less flexible and much thicker braided one from Maplins. Could it be the non-flexibility of the new cable that's causing some kind of connection problem?

it shouldn't rearly be the cable, unless there is a connection loose, as if it was something wrong with the cable, it wouldn't work at all. Have you tried the hub with a different computer to see if the wireless does off at the same time with different computers? because it could be something to do with the wireless card in the computer.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of it being a very temperemental connection duw to the contacts being too far apart but its probably not that anyway. Yeah it does the same with 3 different laptops Ive tried on it at some point; its really weird how it just stops working every evening.... you can set your clock by it...

i dont own a bt homehub but it could the software searching for an update, and if you got BT to come round and set it up, they may of set your one up to update during the night when your not on it, but your uncles will update at the time of 8.30PM, this will cause it to restart and this is why you might lose your wireless signal for awhile, with my wireless router, as soon as it comes on i can recive a wireless signal for around 15 seconds to, then it will go as the ADSL connection comes online, and my wireless will come back on

or try comparing the models of your hubs you might have a newer hub then your uncle (usually the model numbers are on a sticker on the back or underneath the hub)

All houses are different so just because it works in one doesn't mean it will work in another. Walls, floors, tv/mobile masts, microwaves, mobile phones and so on all affect signal.

How far is the PC from the homehub?

Sounds like a range issue, could also be an interference issue so login to the box and change wireless channel, 11 normally works best for me, other household devices tend to be set on channels 1-6 so avoid them.

If the problem persists then get the homehub swapped by BT or get a better aftermarket branded router. The Belkin N series here > http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132751 have a very powerful wireless signal and are very good, every customer I have had with bad signal was sorted with one of these.

Also if you are happy to do so removing wireless security makes range and reliability much, much better. At a trade off for security though.
